VMA and Latin Grammys kick off music awards season | Culture

As 2022 enters its final quarter, music fans are getting excited for the start of music awards season.

Awards season kicked off earlier in September with the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). This year’s edition was highly regarded as it featured a balanced variety of new and returning artists.

Taylor Swift took home the most accolades this year, with three wins: best long-form video; better orientation; and Video of the Year, the most important award of the evening. All three were for her “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” music video.

It made Swift the first artist to win Video of the Year for the third time. She previously won the award for “Bad Blood” (2015) and “You Need to Calm Down” (2019).

“I think it makes sense that Taylor gets all these awards,” Sydney Greitz (junior, psychology). “She’s really popular but more importantly, she’s really good at what she does.”

The other big winners of the night were Harry Styles and Lil Nas X, each taking home three awards. Lil Nas X has already made history as the first LGBTQIA+ artist to win Video of the Year with “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” (2021).

This year’s VMAs also included some surprising upsets, an example being Blackpink’s Lisa beating both BTS as well as her own group, Blackpink, to the Best K-Pop award, for her single “Lalisa” (2022). This made Lisa the first Thai artist to win an award at the VMAs.

Another surprising upset was when Brazilian pop star Anitta won Best Latin for her hit “Enolver” (2021), beating reggaeton powerhouse Bad Bunny. The victory made Anitta the first Brazilian to win an award at the VMAs.

The result left many wondering if we’ll see a similar upheaval at this year’s Latin Grammys, as the nominations came out on Monday; and unsurprisingly Anitta and Bad Bunny compete in many categories.

“I think Anitta might have a shot at winning record of the year with Envolver,” said Tatiana Cleffi (junior, nursing). “But there’s no way Bad Bunny won’t win album of the year, it was the biggest overall, even compared to non-Latin albums.”

Cleffi’s assessment is not particularly wrong. After spending eleven weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, his album “Un Verano Sin Ti” is the best-selling album of the year in the United States; beating several popular English-speaking artists such as Drake, Harry Styles and The Weeknd.

Some think it has a great chance of landing an Album of the Year nomination at the regular Grammys, though the nominations won’t be released until November 15.
