The producer of PEACEFUL MUSIC is proud to announce an all-star cast for this love story set in the South Pacific opening at the home of musicals, The Civic, next month.
New Zealand’s top Pacifica music artists, Tik Tok stars and multi-award-winning voices will take audiences on a beautiful journey from Aotearoa to a mythical Pacific island, performing a catalog of our greatest pop songs ever. interpreted by artists such as Hinewehi Mohi, Annie Crummer, Che Fu, Anika Moa, Hollie Smith, King Kapisi, Nesian Mystik, Brooke Fraser, P-Money, Stan Walker and Six60.
This groundbreaking production is a coming-of-age project for New Zealand creatives, transcending cultural spectacles to deliver large-scale theater spectacle akin to musicals like Mama Mia! and Priscilla Queen of the Desert, telling stories through hits that have been the soundtrack of our lives.
Former Junior All Black and The Lion King star, Nick Afoawill lead this extraordinary cast as a vocal coach and will also perform the role of kaumatua – a nod to his illustrious international career as Simba on stages in Australia, the West End and New Zealand.
In the main role of Tanga, is Jerry Moses Roebeckan island reggae artist and Tik Tok influencer with some 10 million views, and a musician who tours with international artists including Fia, Stan Walker, Sammy J. and much more. He will alternate the role with Selevasio Tu’ima (Sio) of the Rangatahi group Tone6.
Alternating in the female lead role of Venus, Tanga’s love interest, will be the award-winning performer and voice artist Voice of the Pacific, Irene Folau; and Ezra Williams – winner of Best Pacific Female Artist and Best Pacific Soul/R&B Artist at the Pacific Music Awards in 2019, dancer and actress whose credits include Romeo and Juliet, Madagascar the Musical, Little Shop of Horrors.
Interpreter The KoKo (aka Latoia Sasa-Tepania) will play one of the Aunties. She is a multi-nominated artist at the Pacific Music Awards and winner of the Waiata Maori Music Awards 2020, as well as Best Maori R&B Album and Best Pacific Soul/R&B Artist for her song. Expect. Joining her in aunt duties is Anna Grahambest known as a supporting artist for some of New Zealand’s most talented artists including Teeks, Tami Neilson and Lavina Williamsand to perform at major events, including Christmas Coca Cola in the Park, World Masters Games, Festival One and the Aotearoa Music Awards.
Among the troop is ANASETASIAemerging soul, R&B and pop singer-songwriter who released his first EP on December 2 and has performed several times with his brother Moses Mackay (Sol3Mio, The single person). Gibson “Gibz” Harris third in recent TVNZ talent show 60 secondsjoined the group, just like Valerie Fasavalu, a soulful R&B artist and backing vocalist for Tahuna Breaks and Samy J; and Henri Auva’a and George Kaisala Hadfieldmaking their theater debut.
The musical direction comes from Stan Walker and Teeks‘MD, Jacob Nansen, one of the most notable talents in contemporary New Zealand music. Stunning, Pacifica-inspired costumes are produced by a film industry veteran Eithne Curran.
The choreography is Hadleigh Pouesi, who in his 16 year career has excelled in hip hop/street dancing. In addition to her hip hop background, Hadleigh incorporates contemporary dance, Samoan siva, kapa haka and physical theater into her work.
The story begins long ago when a curse falls on an island community and their descendants after a young boy loses a taonga. Fast forward to modern day Auckland where a young man learns the dark secret of his island’s past. Leaving behind the girl he falls in love with, he sets off on a journey to uncover the truth about his heritage and face the challenge of his identity and his past. His life is changed forever.
In the tradition of successful jukebox musicals, PEACEFUL MUSICAotearoa’s score will take the audience on a magical journey, blending Pacific sounds and styles, until a cohesive sound of today’s Aotearoa/New Zealand emerges.
PEACEFUL MUSIC is written and produced by an entertainment industry producer Pak Peacockwhose work has been with some of the world’s greatest artists, including INXS, Talking Heads, Simple Minds, U2 and Elton John. Pak has produced many large-scale events throughout his career in the entertainment industry.
PEACEFUL MUSICthe scenographer of is Delaine Kennedy, a multimedia artist who specializes in large-scale architectural projection and multimedia installations of the highest caliber.
