On Monday, April 11, country music hitmakers will flock to the Nashville Municipal Auditorium for the 2022 CMT Music Awards. As notable nominees eagerly wait for their names to be called, multi-platinum artist Kelsea Ballerini and the Hollywood star Anthony Mackie will bring the party forward as co-hosts.
Country music fans can expect perfectly dressed stars in eye-catching ensembles and jaw-dropping performances from Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Cody Johnson, Kenny Chesney, Maren Morris + Ryan Hurd, Jason Aldean, Little Big Town, Old Dominion and Suite.
During the star-studded affair, one lucky country crooner will walk away as the winner of Male Video of the Year. The 2022 competition is tough, with Cody Johnson, Eric Church, Kane Brown, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett and Walker Hayes going head-to-head.
In honor of the friendly rivalry, CMT took a look back at when fan-favorite musicians won the prestigious accolade. The 2022 CMT Music Awards will air live from Nashville at 8 p.m. ET Monday on CBS.
2021: Kane Brown – “I Adore You”
Kane Brown approached the 2021 CMT Music Awards as a co-host alongside Kelsea Ballerini. While keeping audiences engaged and viewers at home on the edge of their seats, Brown scored male video of the year with his love-centric single “adore youand Collaborative Video of the Year for “Famous Friends” with Chris Young. The fan-voted honor marked Brown’s second victory in the respected category, as he clinched the title in 2019 with “Loose it.” The family music video shot in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was directed by frequent collaborator Alex Alvga. The chart-topping hit lives on Brown’s EP, “Mixtape Vol.1.”
2020: Luke Bryan – “A Daisy”
Luke Bryan scored Male Video of the Year with his feel-good anthem, “A daisyat the 2020 CMT Music Awards. The hit is featured on Bryan’s seventh studio album, “Born here Live here Die here.” The beloved music video was filmed before the pandemic at Bryan’s Crash My Playa festival in Cancun, Mexico. Confidently, Bryan took to the podium to thank his dedicated fans for voting and his supportive mother for making an appearance in the holiday-inspired clip.
“Thank you so much to all the fans who voted for the video,” he said. “All the people who crashed my party… I want to thank my mom for crashing my video and being the star,” he added of the carefree music video which also features his close friends.
2019: Kane Brown – “Lose It”
Country music star Kane Brown received the Male Video of the Year award at the 2019 CMT Music Awards at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The hitmaker marked the distinction with “Loose it», the up-tempo track from his second studio album, «Experience.” Brown wrote the party anthem alongside composers Chase McGill and Will Weatherly.
“It’s awesome! I started on Facebook and got to thank all my fans, who have been behind me through it all,” the young singer said to a roaring crowd of A-listers. only 25 years old, the country crooner nabbed the title from veteran musicians such as Eric Church, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Cole Swindell and Thomas Rhett.In the same year, the singer-songwriter was nominated for the video of the year for the fan-favorite music video, “Good As You”.
2018: Blake Shelton – “I’ll Name the Dogs.”
2018 was a huge year for Blake Shelton as he dominated the star-studded ceremony. The multi-platinum entertainer won Video of the Year for “I will name the dogsand received his 10th win in the Male Video of the Year category. After her victory, the icon took center stage and recognized the next generation of country musicians.
“It’s so cool to sit down tonight with this new generation of country artists coming in,” Shelton shared with hope in her voice. “I may be one of the last old folks to be excited to embrace and be excited about the new generation to come…so good!”
The song that highlights compromise within a relationship incorporates several traditional country elements. The hit that topped the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase/Country Aircheck singles chart was penned by talented songwriters Matt Dragstrem, Ben Hayslip and Josh Thompson. “I will name the dogswhich lives on Shelton’s record, “Texoma Shore” quickly became his 25th career No.
2017: Keith Urban – “Blue Is Not Your Color”
The 2017 Male Video of the Year category was filled with fan-favorite nominees like Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett and Eric Church. However, the Aussie idol snagged the accolade for “Blue is not your color.” After the release, the romantic melody written by Steven Lee Olsen, Hillary Lindsey, and Clint Lagerberg enjoyed huge commercial and chart success. The mid-tempo track shot to the top of the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and sat at No. 1 for 12 consecutive weeks. Director Carter Smith brought the lyrics to life perfectly in a retro-inspired black-and-white music video.
“Thank you. Fans, everyone in the ‘Ville, thank you very much. You have no idea what this means to me. I want to say a big thank you to my wife, Nicole Mary.
