The 2022 CMT Music Awards made a triumphant debut on CBS Monday night, with surprise winners, unifying performances, superstar collaborations and even a co-host with COVID.

Kelsea Ballerini was supposed to co-host the event from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium with actor Anthony Mackie. When she tested positive for COVID-19, Kane Brown dusted off her hosting skills and joined Mackie in the auditorium. Ballerini hosted her parties from her home and beautifully managed to deliver a performance of her new single “HEARTFIRST” from her backyard.

Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood emerged as the big winners of the night, picking up two trophies, including the biggest honor of the night – Video of the Year.

“Winning is more exciting than ever for me,” Aldean said after the show. “It’s one thing to earn rewards when you’re a shiny new penny, but it’s another when you’ve been in the game a long time and competing with all the new shiny pennies. After 17 years, “I’ve never won that particular award. It means a lot to me, always. We all want to win. That’s not why we do it, but it’s nice to be recognized.”

“My fans have voted for me since day one of my career, and that’s why I’m here in the first place,” Underwood said. “The fact that they are still voting is very special, and I don’t take it lightly. I’m so grateful that they carried me through, and we’re still here, and I’m still making music that I love.

Cody Johnson also picked up two wins on Monday night – Male Video of the Year and CMT Digital-First performance of the Year.

“I was very surprised,” Johnson said. “How do you get into the Top 3 with Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean? It’s huge. I was very happy. What a great company to be in. It means the country music brand I’ve been working on for 15 years is starting to work.
