Live everyday like it’s Hottieween!
I love music and I love horror. So when an artist I love releases a scary video, I’m living my best life. Luckily for me, a lot of the artists that I follow do this on a regular basis. So regularly, in fact, that it was hard to limit yourself to just one video of each. I cheated and slipped in bonus links for a few, but still had to leave so many that belong here.
I think all of these artists have an aesthetic that I would love to see transition from music to film. The best part is that they can also contribute to the soundtrack to make it an even better experience. I only see victories here. I present to The Midnight Society, six of my current favorite artists who should make horror films.
Billie Eilish – burying a friend
No one does a better job of marrying spooky imagery with spooky tunes than Billie Eilish. It was hard to choose just one Eilish video and a fun way to spend a Saturday. I went with this one because it feels like a bunch of horror thrillers through a blender. Specifically the back full of needles, Eilish’s contortions, or even having someone under the bed. Would give money for a Billie Eilish movie today.
Madelen Duke – How Villains Are Made
Madalen Duke has a list of videos that could easily become Edit shorts. You listen to a cute little haunting song and look up to see bloodied bodies and hands. I am obsessed! I sometimes waste hours trying to piece together stories in these scary videos and I encourage you to do the same. Additionally, Duke’s outfits in these videos serve the drama in addition to the story. If you want more time with Duke, I strongly suggest “Born Alone Die Alone” next.
Megan Thee Stallion & Dua Lipa – Sweetest Pie
We’ve all been holding our breath for updates on Megan’s next horror movie. Horror is his favorite genre and it’s an obvious influence in some of his videos like “Thot Shit“. However, “Sweetest Pie” is the most recent to have the internet clutching its collective pearls. In this video, Megan and Dua Lipa serve the reality witch, the backup dancers have horns on their heads, and the few men in the video are scared for their lives. Instantly iconic as we’ve come to expect from Thee Stallion herself. If you want more time with Megan, watch Megan Thee Stallion PI in “HOTTIEWEEN” which is a short series of videos where she plays a PI in a town with a vampire problem.
Tierra Whack – MUMBO JUMBO
The Tierra Whack aesthetic is the moment! “MUMBO JUMBO” sees the artists at the dentist but increases that stress by making the office unsettling. It’s uncomfortable before the cockroaches come out or the blood starts squirting. When Whack steps out with the creepy smile into a world of people with creepy smiles, you know you want a Whack horror feature. We have Whack World to hold us in the meantime.
Yvie Oddly – Hype (feat. Vanessa Vanjie)
Yvie Oddly is at her best when she’s having fun and walking at her own pace. This video was dropped for the first few months of the pandemic and we were so busy bouncing around that we almost didn’t notice the obvious. These gorgeous queens are partying in what looks (and felt like at the time) a post-apocalyptic reality. Once this sets in, the dummies become much more disturbing and it looks like a drag race and blurred area mashup that wrinkles my brain. If this one is too much for you, check out Dolla Store which captures the hellish feeling of being brought up in a dollar store with fluorescent lights and all.
Zebra Katz – Ima Read (ft. Njena Reddd Foxxx)
Picking just one Zebra Katz video for this list was difficult because all of them are reasons why I say, “Let Katz make a horror movie today, please.” So, I chose my favorite because I am writing this article and I can do it. “Ima Read” is set in an empty middle school (which is nightmare fuel for me), has creepy masks covering the dancers’ faces, and includes a very cool nod to the creepy twins of the brilliant. I feel like something is summoned every time I play this video, but I can’t (don’t want to) stop, so we’ll have to deal with it. Seriously, take a deep dive in Katz and check out “BLK WICCAN” and “1 Bad Bitch.” Katz clearly understands the mission and I love seeing her!
Let me know who are some of your favorite people releasing scary music videos @misssharai.
