Spill Tab have spent the past two years honing their eclectic and bubbly take on chamber pop, a road that has culminated in the release of two stellar EPs. Claire, the Franco-Korean-American at the origin of the project, always surfs on the top of the very collaborative bonny which saw her team up with a stellar group of musicians and friends. Created while trapped in quarantine, the EP is one of the most exciting releases of 2021.
Coupling Spill Tab’s ever-penetrating songwriting and ear for genre hooks, the EP vaporizes all notions that chamber pop has been wrung out and all that’s left is the same, familiarly dull drops of banal tones. From the joyous cooing on the woozy rocker indie-pop track “Anybody Else”, to the floating daydream of “PISTOLWHIP” before it fades into a rough cacophony of split riffs. Every song on bonny unfolds like a melodic new world of Spill Tab’s marvelous creation. But nothing beats Spill Tab crooning in French, as she does over the fast beats and heart-pounding beats of “en quatre”, a song produced in Paris with Myd and her close friend/chief collaborator marinelli.
The collaboration has become something of a lifeline for Spill Tab, as it has for many artists during the pandemic. At Bonnie, she’s joined by Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis for the track “Indecisive,” as well as up-and-coming singer/songwriter Gus Dapperton for the heartbreak of an anthem “Velcro” and JAWNY for the whirlwind jammer “Grade A.” “.
After depositing bonny – and trust us, you’ll have a hard time doing this – his debut EP oat milk is a phenomenal introduction to the early sounds of Spill Tab. The EP is filled with more atmospheric sounds, stripped down intimate pop pieces and a happy interplay between its English and French lyricism. The opening track “Calvaire”, with its intoxicating soundscapes and commotion of bass, points to the hidden depths of Spill Tab’s repertoire and the rest of the tracks only confirm its refusal to be pigeonholed. A full debut album can’t be far away, but whenever it comes out, you can bet it’ll top the “Best Debut Album” lists that year!
