CCUS projects on the rise

In the early 2000s, a spree of carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) projects were announced. Close to 60% of these projects didn’t progress beyond the initial feasibility assessment. At the time, high project costs and lack of policy support blocked momentum. Today, CCUS is poised for a resurgence. In 2021 alone, close to 100 CCUS projects were announced—almost twice as much as the previous peak in 2008.

Selecting the right partner is critical to the success of your project—from project assessment, development, and operations to long-term monitoring. SLB has been involved in more than 100 CCUS projects worldwide and across industries for the past two decades, supporting companies in their decarbonization journeys.

We are currently engaged in multiple global projects where we provide sequestration site subsurface modeling and development plans, CO2 flow assurance, injectivity derisking, and CO2 containment monitoring. Our global CCUS projects span across onshore and offshore applications and industries—including ethanol, methanol, blue hydrogen, bioenergy with CCS (BECCS), oil and gas processing, enhanced oil recovery, cement, power, steel, and more.

With experience and technical know-how across project assessment, development, operations, and long-term monitoring, SLB helps you navigate across the full CCUS value chain.

Fit-for-purpose CCUS projects

CCUS demands more than technology breakthrough. It requires innovative commercial arrangements to deliver CCUS as a service. This means combining deep competencies across different industries and emitters. From accessing, separating, conditioning, and compressing the CO2 to transporting and storing it deep underground.

Given the scale, complexity, and commercial nature of CCUS, partnerships are essential to share expertise and work to reduce project costs. By partnering with leaders across sectors, SLB provides viable and scalable solutions in a wide range of industries. We offer individual services and technologies to holistic end-to-end solutions using flexible business models fit to your project and objectives.

CCUS is especially suited for large-scale industrial processes. Here are some key sectors that have high potential for commercial-scale deployment:

Cement and steel

The cement industry generates 7% of human-made CO2 emissions. It has no alternative to reducing its footprint but to capture CO2 from the calcination process and dispose of the CO2 at large scale. CCUS will play a leading role in decarbonizing this industry and other hard-to-abate sectors where other technology options are limited, such as aluminum, petrochemical, and steel. Some steel plants generate a high-concentration CO2 stream and are viable candidates to retrofit with CCUS because of their low capture cost.

Blue hydrogen

There are dozens of existing steam methane reformers (SMRs) in chemical complexes and refineries. The key is to modify the SMR process to capture the CO2 instead of venting it. This enables low- or carbon-free production of H2. Learn more about low-carbon hydrogen production and how it enables CCUS at scale.

BECCS

Biomass energy production combined with CCS (known as bio-CCS or BECCS) has enormous potential to remove significant amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere while producing useful products, such as renewable fuels, hydrogen, or electricity. It also has significant market potential to capitalize on existing government-based credit incentive programs.

What does the landscape of CCUS projects look like today?

SLB has worked with companies ranging from oil and gas to utility and power, steel and cement, biomass, and more. Projects include both on- and offshore applications and have focused on injection into saline aquifers and utilized depleted oil and gas reservoirs.

What role do partnerships and collaboration play in CCUS?

Today, we are seeing more collaborative CCUS projects. We collaborate to provide reliable, efficient, and economic CCUS projects to achieve net zero. As the CCUS industry matures, we anticipate more opportunities among industry players to exchange best practices, lessons learned, and the latest in technological innovation. Ultimately, this will help drive new and innovative CCUS solutions.

What kind of planning is involved to implement a CCUS project?

We have a workflow that starts out with the preselection process. This involves us collaborating with you to assess a project’s feasibility before any further investment is done. The next step is the appraisal phase. This is where we get into the site specifics by building geological models leveraging our subsurface data and domain expertise. Then, in the development stage, we manage building out the project. This includes determining the well location for storing the CO2, how many remaining injection and monitoring wells are required, setting up the air and ground monitoring services, and completing any other permit-specific requirements to begin injection. Next comes the injection phase followed by the final phase, postinjection, which can last up to 100 years, depending on where the project is located.
